To set the context, Immortals of Meluha is the first book in the Shiva Trilogy by Amish Trivedi and one of the most popular Indian fantasy books of the last two decades. On par with the Lord of the Rings series, Immortals of Meluha has everything for the audience who craves the spectacular and visually astonishing Indian cinema. All that is needed is a director who is born for this and we might have just found one with S.S Rajamouli.
Rajamouli’s first movie was Student No.1 starring Junior NTR as the lead. Anyone who saw the movie back then would have never imagined a movie like R.R.R coming from him, or Magadheera and Bhahubali as a matter of fact. But he did direct these movies that broke every perception of Indian cinema. He emerged as the James Cameron of India uncontested. Maybe not uncontested, director Shankar was in the limelight for a few years for holding the capacity of visual storytelling that James Cameron possesses.
For big movies to happen directors’ talent alone is not enough, it needs willing producers. Producers who trust the ability of the director, a story that does justice to the directors, and a proven track record so that 100s of crores can be invested. After all, the business of movie-making, as much as it is an art, is a business too and like all businesses, the numbers need to add up at the end.
S.S Rajamouli has proved time and again that he commands all of this. Which makes him the best director to work on the Immortals of Meluha story, by default.
Immortals of the Meluha story follow the rise of Shiva. The Meluhans, who believe that Shiva is their saviour Neelkanth, seek his help to wage war against Chandravanhsis and Nagas. The story is based on the Hindu God Shiva and depicts that all Hindu Gods were once humans and through their actions, they became legends and Gods. Isn’t the premise enticing enough? Shouldn’t Rajamouli already start working on this? A suggestion for the big producers in India, don’t waste any time, run, run with your money purse and contract papers, and run towards Rajamouli. There won’t be any bigger opportunity than this. We are waiting.
