Central Armed Police Forces derive their powers and responsibilities from The Indian Central Police Forces Act of 1949. Central Armed Police Forces contain a wide variety of security forces working under central government and directly administered by the Home Ministry. Every year UPSC invites the applications through UPSC CAPF Notification and conducts the exam through out the country for recruitment of Assistant Commandants into these Indian Paramilitary wings for maintaining internal security and eliminating threats and safeguarding national assets from Internal/External Terrorists.

UPSC has released the official UPSC CAPF 2021 Notification for recruitment of 159 Vacancies in CAPF wings like BSF ( Border Security Forces ), CISF ( Central Industrial Security Forces), CRPF ( Central Reserve Police Force), Indo Tibetan Broder Force (ITBF)- Candidates need to take a special note that, CAPF Assistant Commandant is the highest entry level for Civilians into Indian Military & Para Military Ranks. UPSC CAPF Assistant Commandant is a well respected job with lot of perks; often cleared by candidates preparing for UPSC Civil Services Examination.

How to Apply for UPSC CAPF Assistant Commandant Exam?

Candidates can apply for UPSC CAPF 2021 online by visiting Official Website and following the instructions from the prompt screen. This should be an easy process, candidates need-

Aadhaar Card/Voter Card/PAN Card/Passport/Driving License/Any other Photo ID Card issued by the State/Central Government. The details of this Photo ID Card will have to be provided by the candidate while filling up the online application form


For anyone who wants to withdraw their submitted application form, notification says that the last date to do so is on 5th May 18:00 Hrs.

UPSC CAPF 2021 Eligibility Conditions

  • Only Citizens of India can apply for UPSC CAPF with the exception of Nepal and Bhutan Citizens who are eligible to apply for CAPF exam.
  • No restrictions for Female Candidates. Both male and female candidates can apply for this exam.
  • Upper Age Limit is 25 Years.

A candidate must have attained the age of 20 years and must not have attained the age of 25 years on 1st August 2021, i.e. he/she must have been born not earlier than 2nd August 1996 and not later than 1st August 2001.  

UPSC CAPF Notification

However candidates claiming age relaxation through reservation should submit the necessary documents when needed. A total of 5 years is relaxed for candidates belonging to schedules tribes and scheduled castes. A total of 3 Years is relaxed for candidates belonging to otherwise backward communities. A maximum of 5 Years relaxation is given to candidates who are already working in Central Government Jobs or in Ex Service men children.

Minimum Educational Qualifications: A candidate must hold a Bachelor’s degree from a University incorporated by an Act of the Central or State Legislature in India or other educational institutions established by an Act of Parliament or declared to be deemed as a University under Section-3 of the University Grants Commission Act, 1956 or possess an equivalent qualification.

Assistant Commandant is the highest civilian entry job in paramilitary and has a very high standard of recruitment process that tests both physical and mental strengths of the applicants. Every year this exam is conducted by UPSC in three stages- Written Test, Physical Test & Interview.

UPSC CAPF Interview Marks

After the successful completion of Written Test and Physical Test, third stage involves personality test by a panel of interviewers from UPSC. Interview is for a Total of 150 Marks and will be conducted in New Delhi post which the official result for the UPSC CAPF exam will be released.

Paper 1 General Mental Ability & Intelligence

1.Genral Mental Ability

The questions will be designed to test the logical reasoning, quantitative aptitude including numerical
ability, and data interpretation.

2.General Science

The questions will be set to test general awareness, scientific temper, comprehension and appreciation
of scientific phenomena of everyday observation including new areas of importance like Information
Technology, Biotechnology, Environmental Science.

3.Current Events of National and International Importance

The questions will test the candidates’ awareness of current events of national and international
importance in the broad areas of culture, music, arts, literature, sports, governance, societal and
developmental issues, industry, business, globalisation, and interplay among nations.

4.Indian Polity and Economy

The questions shall aim to test candidates’ knowledge of the Country’s political system and the
Constitution of India, social systems and public administration, economic development in India,
regional and international security issues and human rights including its indicators

5.History of India

The questions will broadly cover the subject in its social, economic and political aspects. This shall
also include the areas of growth of nationalism and freedom movement.

6.India and World Geography

The questions shall cover the physical, social and economic aspects of geography pertaining to India
and the World.

Paper II – General Studies, Essay and Comprehension

Part A

Essay questions which are to be answered in long narrative form either in Hindi or English
totaling 80 Marks. The indicative topics are modern Indian history especially of the freedom struggle,
geography, polity and economy, knowledge of security and human rights issues, and analytical ability.

Part B

Comprehension, précis writing, other communications/language skills – to be attempted in
English only (Marks 120) – The topics are Comprehension passages, précis writing, developing counter
arguments, simple grammar and other aspects of language testing.
